Current Study: Mucoactive agents in paediatric intensive care (MAP Study)
Paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) support the complex medical needs
of children with life threatening conditions. There are 20000 admissions to
PICUs each year in the United Kingdom (UK) and 65% require life support
using a breathing machine. These children may have lung disease, and are
at a higher risk of lung damage, lung collapse and retained lung secretions.
Airway clearance involving physiotherapy and mucoactive medications are
treatment options, aiming to re-expand the lungs and clear secretions, which
prevent complications and help children breathe on their own. Mucoactive
medications are used frequently however there is poor evidence to support
how well they work and their safety. This study aims to collect observational
data, across multiple UK PICUs over four, four-day periods, regarding all
mucoactive medications given to children. Data collected will include details
about the types of medications used, the amount, and how they are given.
Basic information about the patients will also be collected. Data will be
analysed to gain an understanding of how mucoactive medications are
currently used in PICU and inform future research to address uncertainty and
knowledge gaps about effectiveness and safety.
